Why and How Should You Measure Your Publication Impact?

Measure your publication impact to:

  • Assist in funding and grant applications
  • Help shape your research evaluation submission (PBRF)
  • Demonstrate the value of your research
  • Demonstrate your contribution to the University Research Strategy
  • Help the University identify its research strengths, demonstrate its research impact, and benchmark its research performance
  • Use feedback to shape and enhance your future research outputs

You need to use more than one set of metrics to measure the impact of your published outputs, as a range of measures and sources will paint a more comprehensive picture of your publication impact.

Metrics Toolkit

The Metrics Toolkit explains what a metric means, how it is calculated, and whether it is good match for your impact claim. Use the Toolkit along with other resources provided by Massey to examine research impact.

Bibliometrics and altmetrics are commonly used to measure publication impact.

Bibliometrics is the statistical analysis of research publications. It includes the use of measures such as:

  • Citation counts
  • Publications lists
  • H-index

Altmetrics covers other aspects of the impact of a publication, such as how many times it is discussed in social media, news media, and in scholarly networking sites.

Publons is a free service that allows researchers to track, verify and get recognised for their peer review and editorial contributions to scholarly publishing.
