The Development and Applications of a Low-Field Portable NMR system.
Mr Ward''sresearch began with an existing prototype portable nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) apparatus. He extended the capabilities of the apparatus through improved electronics, electromagnetic shielding and temperature regulation. He then rigorously tested the apparatus to ensure scientific measurements were possible. Following satisfactory testing he used the NMR apparatus to study the molecular dynamics of pectin-based biopolymer model systems using solution pH, concentration, and degree of methyl-esterification as adjustable parameters. The NMR results were successfully interpreted with the aid of a mathematical two-site exchange model, and supported by data from the scientific literature obtained using other experimental techniques. Contemporaneously Mr Ward also discovered and studied an apparently anomalous pH-dependent water behavior using pulsed NMR at low and high magnetic field strengths.
