More than thirty years have elapsed since the last truly novel antibacterial drug was released onto the prescription market. Given the rise of super-bugs there is an urgent need to discover new antimicrobial agents. One approach is to look at ways of disrupting bacterial enzymatic pathways; thereby killing bacteria. To this end, Mr Negron studied a specific enzyme within bacteria to understand how the enzyme carries out its reaction. His research has shed light on the mechanism of a vital bacterial enzyme and provides a starting point for the design of future antimicrobial agents.
