HNZ Flight Operations Team

“Studying towards my Bachelor of Aviation Management was the best decision I have made. It has the right balance between a management degree and specific aviation-related topics, such as human factors and aircraft incident and accident investigation…”

Massey has the perfect program for aircraft enthusiasts, making it the best starting point in New Zealand to begin your career in aviation.

Aviation has been my passion since the year 2000, when I got the opportunity to visit the cockpit on the way from Frankfurt to Dakar, Senegal. Seeing the sun set over the Sahara was incredible and so began my obsession with airplanes.

I spent the first two semesters on the Manawatū campus surrounded by like-minded people, which was a great experience.  For the remainder of my degree I studied by distance and started working for an Offshore Oil & Gas helicopter company in sunny Nelson.

HNZ New Zealand Limited provides helicopter services supporting the Offshore Oil and Gas industry, Mining and Search and Rescue (SAR) at bases in New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Antarctica and across Australia.  I work in the HNZ Flight Operations team, where I spend most of my time sending our pilots, engineers and management team around the globe to our various bases. As my experience develops, I will be involved with the

  • setup of new bases
  • liaising with simulator providers in Europe and Malaysia for pilots regarding currency training and type ratings; and
  • with the implementations of FRMS within our operation.

I encourage anyone with an interest in aviation to take any opportunity that may present itself and to not be afraid to show your passion for the industry.

With a BAvMan degree you will have access to a wide range of career options in aviation-related industries. Potential employers include:

  • SITA - the world’s leading specialist in air transport communications and information technology
  • Menzies Aviation - a global provider of passenger, ramp and cargo handling services (in 31 countries with over 19,000 staff!)
  • Airways New Zealand
  • New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority - regulates civil aviation in New Zealand
  • Airlines and airports

These companies will be interested in your knowledge of aviation and management - a perfect combination in roles such as airfield officer, terminal duty managers, retail and terminal operations management, compliance, air accident investigation, customer service, sales and marketing and much more.

Massey University offers an active internship programme for the Bachelor of Aviation Management. This 12-week programme enables you to combine your university study with work in an area of the aviation industry. You get real-world experience working in a company, where you can see how you can apply the things you’ve learnt during your study and gain valuable industry contacts to help your future career.

Tasman Cargo Airlines

Tasman Cargo Airlines supports DHL Express on the New Zealand/Australia route and also operates charter flights. The airline hosted two students from Massey on their twelve week internship programme in 2018/2019.

“Both students demonstrated a very high level of maturity and understanding of the needs of the business and made a worthwhile and positive contribution to the operation during their time with the airline. TCA would welcome a further intake of interns in the future and as a means of supporting and promoting both the students and the aviation industry in New Zealand.”

Sam Rawlings Sam Rawlings – Tasman Cargo Airlines
“The internship helped improve my knowledge of front line / airline operations and also helped me make valuable contacts within the wider aviation industry. It was a great opportunity to practically apply the knowledge and learning I had gained to date in the Bachelor of Aviation Management degree.”

Sadie Kim Sadie Kim – Tasman Cargo Airlines
“Several of my university courses had direct relevance to my internship duties at Tasman Cargo. The understanding of the industry structure, regulations, and key institutions I gained from my courses enabled me to adapt to the environment quickly and to have discussions about the industry with other professionals. A major highlight was the opportunity to travel to the Tasman Cargo Sydney base with the Captain, and Flight Officer – it was one of the best days of my life!
