In the Bachelor of Arts (Geography) you’ll study how we interact with our cultural, social and physical environments. Geography is a diverse and dynamic subject, covering issues such as sustainability, urban development, globalisation, and people’s lived experiences of their environments. Geographers like to get out into the field to study the world as it really is, and use a variety of tools, including geospatial mapping technologies.
Stage one of the BA Geography includes both human and physical geography.
This will give you a solid foundation for understanding our world as the product of a combination of social and natural processes. More advanced courses expand on the themes established at stage one. You can specialise in human geography, or include more advanced geospatial and physical geography courses as well.
Massey partners with local organisations, and you’ll go on field trips that show you the kinds of things geographers are doing outside the classroom.
Geography is a globally oriented discipline. You’ll learn about New Zealand and its place in the world as well as internationally significant topics like globalisation, urban change, climate change and geopolitics. Our lecturers are deeply involved with the vibrant international geography community, so you know you’re learning at the cutting edge, whether it’s the latest geospatial and mapping technologies, or the most recent thinking on how cities are changing in a digital world.
A geography degree can lead to postgraduate programmes overseas in the UK, Canada or USA.
Our students have more opportunities to be actively involved in class with higher success rates, dynamic teaching environments, and greater instructor support.
Geography will prepare you to be a thoughtful and knowledgeable local and global citizen.
It will give you important career skills in research, spatial analysis and mapping skills, and evidence-based examination of the pressing issues facing New Zealand and the world today.
Massey is ranked in the world’s top 200 universities for geography by the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking.
Human geography makes use of a wide range of theory, conceptual tools, qualitative and quantitative methods to help us make sense of the world and our diverse lived experiences. Through geography we are better equipped to understand issues with dimensions that might include history/context, scale, networks, ideology, politics, economics, social and cultural, ethnicity, identity, the natural and the built environment.
My lecturers’ flexibility and recognition of my interests and commitments outside of academia has been great and this has enabled my personal, professional, and academic growth throughout my time at Massey.
The intellectual and conceptual tools, work ethic, independence, and discipline that geography in particular has helped me develop have already proven to be of value every day. I feel more engaged with the world and the diverse issues that surround our day to day existence.
