Eligibility for U.S. Financial Aid

There are a number of criteria that must be met to be eligible for a U.S. federal or education loan:

  • You must be an eligible student
  • You must be enrolled for more than half time in an eligible programme of study
  • You may not enrol in a Distance (online) course or programme
  • You must maintain satisfactory academic progress
  • You must complete and meet all the application criteria

While you may be an eligible student, the amounts you can borrow are dependent on the type of loan, the annual and aggregate limits, your expected family contribution, your cost of attendance, and any other aid you may be receiving.

Student eligibility

To be eligible for a U.S. federal or education loan you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Have a valid Social Security number
  • Not be in default on any federal loan repayments
  • Males aged 18-25 must comply with Selective Service registration
  • Not have a drug conviction that renders you ineligible to receive loans
  • Maintain Satisfactory Academic Progress
  • Be enrolled at least half-time in an eligible programme, and study on campus
  • Not being enrolled in any distance (online) courses

Programme eligibility

  • You must be enrolled at least half time, i.e. 30 credits per semester/60 credits per academic year, in an eligible programme.
  • Massey University's Bachelor degrees are eligible programmes at Undergraduate level, and our Masters and PhD degrees are eligible programmes at Postgraduate level.
  • The Bachelor of Veterinary Science is recognised as a Graduate/Professional programme for students who have successfully completed the equivalent of an undergraduate degree prior.
  • Students enrolled in an online programme are not eligible to receive Federal Aid loans.
  • Students enrolled in graduate and postgraduate diplomas are not eligible for Federal Aid loans and have to finance their study through a private loan or other private funding.

Please note: Important exclusions as regulated by the U.S. Department of Education

  • Pre-degree bridging programmes and non-degree programmes, such as diplomas and certificates, are ineligible programmes for U.S. financial aid. Students studying at this level may elect to apply for private education loans
  • The Bachelor of Nursing is an ineligible for U.S. Financial Aid
  • Online (Distance) Programmes

Satisfactory academic progress
