By studying veterinary science at Massey University you’ll join a world-leading veterinary programme that will qualify you to work as a veterinarian in many different areas. The pre-selection semester is your first step towards studying this degree.
Massey is the only New Zealand university offering veterinary training.
The BVSc degree is fully accredited by the Australasian Veterinary Board Council (AVBC), the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), and the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). This means our graduates can work as veterinarians not only in New Zealand, but also Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, the USA and many other countries.
Massey University’s veterinary programme is ranked in the top 50 universities worldwide by both the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking and ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
The BVSc is a five-year degree that is divided into a pre-selection semester and a professional phase.
The Bachelor of Veterinary Science pre-selection phase is a one-semester programme that you must complete before applying for the Bachelor of Veterinary Science degree (professional phase).
It takes place over Semester One (beginning late February each year).
During this phase you will complete a range of selection assessments and take pre-requisite courses for veterinary selection (or alternates if you are given credit for these courses).
To be accepted into the professional phase of the BVSc, the selection panel will review your course grades in the pre-selection phase, along with the results of your selection assessments to create a ‘selection score’ and ranking. This will determine whether you are accepted into the professional phase.
The professional phase starts in semester two (July) of your first year. If you are selected into this professional phase of the BVSc programme, you will take a range of courses covering everything you need to become a qualified veterinarian.
There is a separate application for each phase (pre-selection and professional) of the BVSc, but not every applicant will need to complete them both.
Before you apply, you can review information on requirements, determining what type of applicant you are and details of planning your study can be found on the BVetTech planning page.
