The Financial Education (Fin-Ed) Centre works to help New Zealanders become more financially savvy by improving their knowledge, attitudes and behaviour towards money. The Fin-Ed Centre is globally unique for the breadth of its work around financial literacy, covering education, research and consultancy. We undertake research and run courses for both groups and individuals.
We run tailor-made and bespoke courses for individuals, groups and organisations. As well as financial management courses, we also train those who wish to teach personal financial management. Our courses are affordable and practical. Many are available via distance learning, so you can learn when and where it suits you.
We are constantly working on research that is relevant for both businesses and individuals looking to increase their financial capability. This includes research into housing decisions, saving for retirement and giving our children (better) financial literacy skills. This research is publicly available.
As a financial education leader in New Zealand, the Westpac Massey Fin-Ed Centre has launched an initiative to improve professional standards in the sector.
Dr Pushpa Wood, Director of the Fin-Ed Centre, has been nominated for a Woman of Influence Award in the category of Community and Not for Profit. One hundred women have been recognised for their role in shaping and influencing New Zealand across ten categories: Arts and Culture, Board and Management, Business Enterprise, Community and Not for Profit, Diversity, Global, Innovation, Public Policy and Rural. Dr Wood is among twenty women honoured for their work in the community, in this, the largest category of nominees. The 2015 Women of Influence category winners and the supreme award winner will be announced at the Awards Dinner at SKYCITY Auckland on Wednesday 4 November.
In July the Fin-Ed Centre ran a half-day workshop in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Commission for Financial Literacy and Retirement Income. You can see the presentations and an outline of the PISA results here.
