Level of Study

The Charles W. R. Smith Memorial Scholarship financially supports Massey University undergraduate agriculture students.

Charles William Robert Smith completed the herd testing course at Massey Agricultural College in 1931 and then spent his life farming in the Whangaehu area near Whanganui. In 1968, he bought a sheep and beef farm in Whangaehu Valley Road. He died in 2006, and his family created the Charles William Robert Smith Memorial Trust that set up this scholarship in 2015 in his memory.

Value and Tenure
The value of the scholarship is $5,000 and it is offered annually. The tenure is for a single academic year. 
The scholarship is paid in two equal instalments provided the recipient is making good academic progress

Typical Number on Offer
Typically, one scholarship will be awarded per year.

Applicants must have successfully completed the first year for an undergraduate degree in agriculture at Massey University.

Selection Criteria
The selection will be based on:
•academic merit.
•financial need.
•an ability to show work ethic, especially with their studies.
•past work in agriculture.
•contribution to the community.

Selection Committee
The Applied Academic Programmes Scholarships Committee provides a shortlist of the three best applicants to members of the Charles William Robert Smith Memorial Trust who make the final decision regarding the recipient for the year. 
The trust reserves the right to not award the scholarship in any year that the standard of applications is not of sufficient quality. The decision is final.

Conditions of the Scholarship
The recipient is expected to not be in receipt of any other major scholarships in the same year as this scholarship.

Application cannot be accepted before 30/09/2020.
